The biggest mistake we usually make when working in the field of marketing and advertising is thinking that people around the globe all deeply care about advertising like the way we do.
In recent years, the word Marketing has become extremely popular with the young as a trendy and interesting field for us all to pursue. Unlike the aridity of financial reports, marketing and advertising campaigns in particular bring us to the world where people talk about more interesting things namely creativity, psychology, consumer insights, buying behaviors, etc. It is undeniable that marketing is the field that closely relates to our daily life the most, probably that’s why we love marketing and so many people would like to work as a marketer regardless of their backgrounds.
Ignoring my prolix beginning, now I’ll focus on the main topic – the title of this blog. Why we should be an ordinary human being, not giving a f*ck to advertising and communications?
After several years of finding our true-selves and the major that might be the most suitable with our abilities and interests, the first thing we do is undoubtedly surrounding our life with it as much as possible by stricking up the relationships with friends and predecessors studying or working in this field, following related fanpages, joining related groups on social media platforms and researching credible websites to read. For instance, when we live in a world where everyone you know all talks about marketing from real life to social media. Everyday, we will hear, we will see some talk about 4Ps, some talk about facebook ads, some talk about SEO mindset, some analyze the latest TVC of Aba or Grab, others dissect How Starbucks applies SWOT model in their business. As a result, we misunderstand that all human beings on the world deeply care about marketing like the way we do without noticing that the Earth is big and our community is just a part of the whole diversified world. Correspondingly, sometimes we make contents and ads with a hope that it will become viral and be cared by everyone, but sadly that, ordinary humans don’t pay as much attention to advertising as we may think.
Before spending time learning marco-knowledge in this field, why don’t we pause for a while, to put ourselves in normal humans’ shoes? Give myself as a typical example, the version when I don’t care about marketing. I frequently feel awkward when an ad appears while I’m enjoying a funny clip on YouTube, I try to skip it as soon as possible though its length is just 20 seconds. I never give a sh!t to how emotional and meaningful the TVCs of Grab are until too many people discuss about them on Marketing community groups. When using my personal vehicles on the road, I never pay attention to the print ads on pedestrian bridge until there is a post on social media talking about it. I don’t think the fonts and the sizes of words and numbers designed on a poster, print ad, billboard or social media post are important because I don’t wanna spend my time on unnecessary things like this (it doesn’t mean that I disapprove the importance of them because they affect our psychology directly and normal humans don’t realize it.)
After all, to recap what I mean in this blog, before becoming a great marketer and advertising campaign maker, we should be an outstanding ordinary human being. Think that we are not marketer, we don’t give a sh!t to marketing, we just think about products, purchasing and brands in the simplest way. Cause advertising isn’t made for marketers, it is made for ORDINARY HUMAN BEINGS.
